For years, the answer to “Which Android chip is better?” was almost always Qualcomm. But over the last few generations, MediaTek has quietly changed that conversation.
The Dimensity 9500 proved it could keep pace with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in both benchmarks and everyday performance, making the flagship chipset race closer than ever. Now, both companies are preparing for an even bigger showdown as they transition to TSMC’s cutting-edge 2nm process.
While neither chipset has been officially announced, leaks have already painted a clear picture of where Qualcomm and MediaTek are heading. And based on what’s surfaced so far, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Dimensity 9600 appear to be taking different approaches to winning the next generation of Android flagships.
Both are making the leap to 2nm
The biggest similarity between the two chips is also their biggest upgrade.
Both the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Dimensity 9600 are expected to be manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm process, making them among the first smartphone chipsets to adopt the technology.
Compared to previous generations, the smaller manufacturing process should improve power efficiency while reducing heat output. In simple terms, users can expect better battery life, cooler temperatures under heavy workloads, and more performance without a significant increase in power consumption.
Rather than chasing clock speeds alone, both Qualcomm and MediaTek appear to be focusing on efficiency, an area that has become increasingly important as smartphones continue packing larger batteries, brighter displays, and more AI-powered features.
CPU? Similar layout, different philosophy
One interesting detail is that both companies are rumored to adopt the same 2+3+3 CPU configuration, replacing the older 2+6 layout found in previous flagship chips.
On paper, both chips will feature:
- 2 Prime cores
- 3 Performance cores
- 3 Efficiency cores
The difference lies in the cores themselves.
Qualcomm is expected to continue using its custom Oryon CPU architecture, while MediaTek is rumored to rely on ARM’s next-generation Cortex-based cores.
Qualcomm’s custom cores have generally offered excellent peak performance and efficiency, while ARM’s latest designs have become increasingly competitive with every generation. Until benchmarks become available, it’s difficult to declare a winner.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is also rumored to include 16MB of L2 cache and 6MB of system-level cache (SLC), giving frequently accessed data faster access and potentially improving gaming and multitasking performance.
GPU is where things get interesting
Graphics performance may end up being the biggest battleground this year.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is rumored to feature:

- 12MB GMEM graphics memory

- Hardware ray tracing
Meanwhile, the Dimensity 9600 is expected to use ARM’s next-generation Immortalis GPU, codenamed Magni.
The biggest talking point is MediaTek’s rumored hardware-level frame generation.
Unlike software-based frame interpolation, which can introduce additional latency, the new Immortalis GPU is expected to generate extra frames directly on the silicon. In supported titles, games running at 60fps could be displayed at 120fps, resulting in smoother gameplay without relying heavily on software tricks.
The GPU is also rumored to support:

This is one area where both companies appear evenly matched.

- UFS 5.0 storage
That means faster app launches, quicker game loading, and improved multitasking regardless of which platform manufacturers choose.
Qualcomm still leads in connectivity… for now
Connectivity has traditionally been one of Qualcomm’s strongest advantages, and that trend may continue.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is expected to feature Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X90 5G modem, reportedly capable of download speeds reaching 15Gbps, up from 12.5Gbps on the previous generation.
The modem is also rumored to integrate additional AI hardware directly into the baseband chip, potentially improving network optimization and power efficiency.
Additional connectivity features reportedly include:
- Wi-Fi 8
- Bluetooth 7
MediaTek is also expected to improve connectivity on the Dimensity 9600, but very few details have leaked so far.
The bigger picture
Rather than simply trying to outperform one another in benchmarks, Qualcomm and MediaTek appear to be targeting different strengths.
Qualcomm continues to build on its reputation with custom CPU cores, mature modem technology, and strong gaming performance through Adreno GPUs.
MediaTek, meanwhile, looks focused on bringing more advanced graphics technologies to mobile devices, particularly with hardware-level frame generation that could benefit gaming without significantly increasing GPU workload.
If both companies deliver what current leaks suggest, smartphone brands may have an easier time choosing between two genuinely competitive flagship platforms instead of defaulting to Qualcomm.
