Qualcomm has set another new standard in the smartphone segment.
It started with the Oryon custom cores for the Snapdragon 8 Elite. Now, an incredibly long software support period that even surpasses Apple’s typical six years for iPhones.
All devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite come with eight years of Android OS software support! That means up to eight major upgrades for the likes of Xiaomi 15, Samsung Galaxy S25, OnePlus 13, and many more. If the device is shipped with Android 15, they are eligible up to Android 23 based on this.
However, Qualcomm doesn’t release Android software updates. So, it will still depend on your phone’s manufacturer.
Snapdragon 8 Elite software update insights
For example, Samsung may debut the Galaxy S25 with eight years of Android OS support. When the Galaxy S24 debuted, the tech giant promised seven years of firmware support for the series, including the Galaxy S24 FE.
Meanwhile, Google promised seven years for Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 Series. For most Android devices, the maximum period is only two years and Google isn’t so strict about this. Thus, many entry-level smartphones don’t get a lot of upgrades over time and are often limited to security patches.
