The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has arrived and is packed with new stuff that many phone brands will want for 2024.
This 4-nm flagship chip from Qualcomm has a direct focus on AI, gaming, audio, and camera improvements, which are big enough to lure brands into using it on their next flagships for 2024.
Below are some of the notable upgrades on Snapdragon 8 Gen 3:
- 30% faster processing than Gen 2
- 20% more power efficient than Gen 2
- 25% faster graphics rendering than previous Adreno
- 25% improved GPU power efficiency than previous Adreno
The configuration is 1×3.3GHz prime core + 5×3.2GHz performance cores + 2×2.3GHz efficiency cores. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 can support LPDDR5x memory of up to 4800MHz and as much as 24GB of RAM. It also supports Wi-Fi 7 up to 6GHz.
AI is focused on Gen 3 covering multi-modal generative AI models and large language models for speech recognition. Qualcomm boasts that this chipset has the fastest stable diffusion to generate an image in a fraction of a second.
For gaming, the chipset will now break the barrier between console and mobile gaming with 240FPS support on devices with 240Hz displays. This is further enhanced by Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0 for smooth frame generation. Unreal Engine 5.2 support included too.
Combine those with 40% better ray tracing than Gen 2 and you’ll definitely want to play more on your smartphone. If you’re into audio immersion, the chip supports 24-bit 96kHz lossless music over Bluetooth.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is coming to many brands. A rumor alleges that Samsung Galaxy S24 will become a pocket AI machine with the help of this chip. Samsung’s Bixby virtual assistant is getting a major overhaul as well.
iQOO 12 is reported included in the first wave of recipients of this chip. With Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, games like PUBG Mobile, PUBG New State, Genshin Impact, and League of Legends: Wild Rift will run at 144FPS via frame interpolation.
Qualcomm has partnered with ASUS, HONOR, iQOO, Meizu, Nio, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, realme, Redmi, RedMagic, Sony, vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE, the first recipients of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Devices powered by this chip are launching in the coming weeks.
