Sony has officially unveiled the Xperia 1 VIII, its latest flagship that leans heavily into what the brand does best: camera hardware, creator-focused tools, and a design philosophy that refuses to follow trends blindly.
Smarter Cameras, Bigger Sensors
At the center of the Xperia 1 VIII is a revamped imaging system powered by what Sony calls the AI Camera Assistant, backed by Xperia Intelligence. The system analyzes subjects and environmental conditions in real time, then recommends optimal settings such as color tone, lens choice, and bokeh. These suggestions tie into Sony’s “Creative Look” profiles, which borrow directly from its Alpha camera lineup.
On the hardware side, the biggest upgrade comes from the telephoto lens. Sony has introduced a much larger 1/1.56-inch sensor roughly four times bigger than the one used in the Xperia 1 VII. The goal is straightforward: better clarity and detail when shooting distant subjects.
Low-light performance is also getting a boost. All three primary lenses: 16mm, 24mm, and 70mm now use RAW multi-frame processing, designed to expand dynamic range and reduce noise. Sony claims this approach brings performance closer to what you’d expect from a full-frame camera.
Design That Sticks to Sony’s Identity
The Xperia 1 VIII introduces what Sony calls the “ORE design,” inspired by natural textures and raw gemstones. It comes in Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold.
Despite the redesign, Sony keeps features many brands have abandoned. There’s still a dedicated hardware shutter button and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Audio is handled by Advanced Full-Stage Stereo Speakers, with identical left and right units aimed at delivering deeper bass, clearer highs, and a wider soundstage.
Flagship Performance and Battery Stability
Powering the device is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, which Sony says delivers a 20% performance improvement over the previous generation. The focus here is not just raw speed, but smoother multitasking and better handling of content creation workloads.
The Xperia 1 VIII retains a 5,000mAh battery. Sony claims up to two days of usage on a single charge, along with battery health retention for up to four years. A new Processing Optimization feature helps reduce power consumption during demanding tasks like navigation and mapping.
Display and Core Specifications
The phone features a 6.5-inch FHD+ OLED HDR display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz. It supports 240Hz motion blur reduction and 240Hz touch sampling, along with Creator Mode, full DCI-P3 coverage, REC.2020 color space, 10-bit tonal gradation, and Sony’s X1 for mobile engine. Protection comes via Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
Under the hood, it offers 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM, paired with 256GB or up to 1TB of UFS 4.1 storage, expandable up to 2TB via microSD. The device runs Android 14 with a promise of four OS upgrades and six years of security updates.
Cameras and Multimedia Capabilities
The rear camera system includes:
- 48MP primary sensor (1/1.35-inch Exmor T) with Hybrid OIS/EIS
- 48MP ultra-wide (16mm, 104° field of view)
- 48MP telephoto (70mm) with 3x optical zoom and up to 17.5x hybrid zoom, using the upgraded 1/1.56-inch sensor
The setup supports ZEISS T* coating, Real-Time Eye AF for humans and animals, Real-Time Tracking, and 4K HDR video recording.
On the front, there’s a 12MP camera with 4K video support.
Audio features include a 3.5mm jack, 360 Reality Audio, Dolby Atmos, DSEE Ultimate, and Qualcomm aptX HD, along with stereo recording capabilities.
Connectivity, Build, and Extras
The Xperia 1 VIII includes a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and measures 162 x 74 x 8.3mm, weighing 200g. It carries IPX5/IPX8 water resistance and IP6X dust protection.
Connectivity options include 5G (sub-6GHz), 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 LE, GPS/GLONASS, NFC, and USB 3.2 Type-C.
Battery features include 30W fast charging, wireless charging, Battery Share, Xperia Adaptive Charging, Battery Care, and STAMINA Mode.

Sony is offering an optional translucent case with a built-in stand, designed to resist yellowing over time.
