Viber joins the war against unsolicited and annoying calls with its own caller ID feature.
In this age where information flows like water, you should do everything to protect your personal data. But that’s not entirely possible for your mobile number. Thus, you get these annoying calls every now and then, which are often used by bad actors to steal sensitive details.
To stop unsolicited, unwanted, and annoying calls, Rakuten Viber has launched a caller ID service for its mobile app in the Philippines. Viber users can enable this protection to detect any incoming calls, regardless if the caller is not using the app. When enabled, suspicious calls will be flagged as spam to warn users, but the coolest part is that the status is shared across Viber users.
Let’s say an unknown number called you and it triggered the spam protection on Viber. If you flag it as spam, this will alert other Viber users. To flag a number as spam, you need to end the call and make post-call actions, like redialing, messaging, saving it to your contacts, and reporting it as spam.
Don’t take this spam protection lightly because many people are victimized by just a single call. Recently, the Philippine National Police warned individuals about the one-ring phone scam, with an unknown number ringing you for a single time. This isn’t the whole deal because the real threat happens when you call back that number. Spam protections from reliable apps may help deter such threats away and reduce the odds of your sensitive info getting stolen.
Viber’s new caller ID is available on Viber version 19.3.0 or later.
