Are wide foldables the new incoming meta?

The next phase of foldable smartphones may not just be about thinner hinges or crease reduction. It could be about going wider. New leaks suggest that multiple Android brands are preparing to push into the wide-screen foldable category.

Alongside rumors of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Wide arriving later this year, vivo, OPPO, and HONOR are all reportedly working on their own wide-format foldables.

According to tipster Smart Pikachu, vivo’s upcoming vivo X Fold6 will already bring improvements to the foldable experience, including a less noticeable display crease. More notably, the tipster claims that future foldables from vivo will adopt a wider display design, hinting at a broader shift in the company’s roadmap.

OPPO is said to be exploring a similar direction. A separate leak suggests the company is currently testing a wide foldable device, though it remains in the evaluation stage. Details are still limited, but the move indicates OPPO is actively experimenting with new form factors beyond its current foldable lineup.

HONOR, meanwhile, may be closer to delivering its version. Another tipster claims the brand has been working on a wide foldable for some time and could unveil it in the near future. This aligns with HONOR’s growing presence in the foldable space, where it has been steadily refining both hardware and design.

The concept of wider foldables isn’t entirely new. HUAWEI recently introduced the HUAWEI Pura X Max, which features one of the widest displays seen on a foldable device so far though with a more unconventional design approach.

Even Apple is rumored to be exploring the category, with reports pointing to a wide-screen foldable iPhone that could launch as the iPhone Ultra later this year.

If these leaks hold true, the foldable market could be heading toward a new design priority: maximizing usable screen space in a more natural, tablet-like aspect ratio. Wider displays could improve multitasking, media consumption, and overall usability; areas where current foldables still face trade-offs.

With multiple brands now experimenting in this direction, the foldable landscape may soon look very different, and a lot wider, than what users have grown accustomed to.
