The battle of foldables is heating up, and vivo is entering the arena with a device that could put Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 to shame.

It’s fascinating to see just how far foldables have come. Back when the first Samsung Galaxy Z Fold was released, it was seen as nothing more than an expensive display of technological prowess from smartphone manufacturers. Now that the technology has matured, the narrative has shifted from being a mere “flex” to something genuinely useful and practical.
But enough about the broader trend; let’s talk about vivo’s upcoming foldable, the X Fold 5. We’ve previously discussed its rumored specifications, but now that more details have been revealed directly from Vivo executives, we can make more educated guesses about what to expect.
While vivo still hasn’t released the official spec sheet, they did showcase just how thin and light the X Fold 5 is, both when folded and unfolded. Images shared by vivo executive Han Boxiao depicted the X Fold 5 being half the thickness of the iPhone 16 Pro Max when unfolded, and almost the same, if not thinner, than the iPhone when folded.

Along with these images, vivo also released a short video demonstrating how light the X Fold 5 is compared to the previous X Fold 3, which was already the lightest book-style foldable at just 219 grams. We still urge readers to take these teasers with a grain of salt, but if they hold true, then the Z Fold 7 (Ultra or not) might face stiff competition.
Beyond its impressive physical attributes, the X Fold 5’s leaked specifications paint a picture of a device truly worthy of a flagship title. Featuring a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset coupled with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, the X Fold 5 is certainly no slouch in performance, even if the chipset is a year and a half old.
Remarkably, despite its amazingly thin profile, the X Fold 5 still manages to squeeze in a 6,000 mAh battery with fast-charging capabilities that set it apart from the rest. This addresses a common concern with thin and light devices, often preventing them from being truly useful pieces of equipment and relegating them to the status of a mere gimmick.
It’s clear that the X Fold 5 isn’t just for show; it represents a new era for foldables. One that focuses on making the technology more accessible, comfortable, and practical, likely to appeal to a wider audience.
While it’s already apparent that the X Fold 5 is impressive based on the available information, the crucial question remains: Will it be sold globally, or will it remain a China-exclusive device?
