A relatively unknown Chinese AI company is making a bold claim. StepFun has announced what it calls the world’s first “AI Agentic Phone,” beating rumored AI smartphone projects from bigger names like OpenAI, at least on paper.
The Shanghai-based company has introduced the StepX Neo, a smartphone designed around AI-first experiences rather than traditional apps. While the announcement generated attention, many questions remain unanswered, including the phone’s hardware specifications and whether its software truly delivers a new type of smartphone experience.
Founded in 2023 by former Microsoft employees in Shanghai, StepFun has primarily focused on artificial intelligence.
Rather than building smartphones, the company has been known for providing on-device AI integrations to partners such as OPPO and Geely.
Now, StepFun is entering the smartphone market with its own branded device, although it is believed that the hardware itself is being manufactured by an original design manufacturer (ODM).
At the center of the announcement is the StepX Neo, which StepFun describes as the world’s first AI Agentic Phone.
The smartphone runs Step AOS, an operating system built around the company’s AI assistant called Step Amoo.
Like other AI chatbots, users interact with Amoo using natural language. However, StepFun says its operating system goes beyond a traditional assistant by providing a “native runtime environment” for intelligent agents.
According to the company, Step AOS focuses on solving what it describes as the three biggest challenges facing AI agents:
- Memory
- Decision-making
- Execution
StepFun claims its AI agent can retrieve stored memories in as little as 15 milliseconds and is capable of performing autonomous tasks even while offline.
Although StepFun emphasizes on-device AI, not everything happens locally.
The company says the phone can also use cloud computing for more demanding workloads while ensuring users’ personal data stays on the device.
Powering the local AI features is Step Edge, the company’s own large language model (LLM).
StepFun claims Step Edge ranks first among comparable models across 29 authoritative benchmarks, although it has not disclosed which benchmarks were used or which competing models were included in the comparison.
That remains unclear.
StepFun says Step AOS combines Android, Linux, and RTOS (Real-Time Operating System) technologies.
However, the company has not explained how deeply the software differs from Android, leaving open the possibility that it could simply be an Android-based operating system with extensive AI customization.
The company also revealed part of the phone’s design.
The rear panel features a dot-matrix LED display, a design element that resembles the Glyph lighting system found on Nothing smartphones.
Beyond that, StepFun has not revealed any hardware specifications. There are currently no official details about the display, processor, cameras, battery, or charging capabilities.
StepFun has confirmed several launch partners for the StepX Neo.
These include popular Chinese apps and services such as:
- Meituan
- Alipay
- Amap
- Baidu
- Didi
- Ctrip
The partnerships suggest the company is positioning the phone primarily for the Chinese market.
For now, the StepX Neo remains more of a concept than a fully detailed smartphone.
While StepFun is making ambitious claims about launching the world’s first AI Agentic Phone, it has yet to provide key information about the hardware or demonstrate how its AI experience differs from existing smartphones equipped with AI assistants.
Whether the StepX Neo becomes a genuine breakthrough or simply an early attempt to capitalize on growing interest in AI-powered devices remains to be seen. As of now, the announcement raises more questions than it answers.
