A new YouTube video has sparked buzz in the tech community. It pits the camera systems of the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro head to head. The images and clips shown suggest the two phones are close in many areas, but the differences tell stories about philosophy, trade-offs, and who these phones are made for.
Xiaomi leans into bold hardware: large sensors, aggressive zoom, and a secondary screen by the cameras. Apple, on the other hand, sticks with a more conservative but refined approach: tighter optics, consistent tuning, and polished video pipelines.
What the Video Shows (so far)

In the clips, Xiaomi’s Pro Max images tend to emphasize punch; more contrast, more saturation, sharper edges. The zoom shots pull in details, especially in daylight, that seem to edge past what the iPhone’s 48 MP telephoto is doing.

On the iPhone side, the video samples show smoother transitions in shadows and highlights. The iPhone’s color tone looks more natural and less aggressive. In low light, the iPhone seems to preserve detail better in corners, though Xiaomi holds its own in raw exposure.
One cool trick Xiaomi uses is its rear mini-display. The video shows a person using the back screen to frame a shot. That’s a flexibility Apple doesn’t (yet) offer.
Xiaomi 17 Pro Max

- Triple 50 MP cameras (wide, ultra wide, telephoto), each lens rumored to be strong in its class.
- Telephoto: 5× optical zoom is expected (some leaks suggest up to f/2.6)
- A secondary screen next to the camera array; useful for framing, selfies, quick previews
- Strong in high contrast scenes; possibly heavy on post-processing punch (saturation, contrast)
iPhone 17 Pro

- Triple 48 MP “Fusion” system with a new telephoto lens that Apple claims gives “optical 8× quality” from a 4× lens (using clever cropping and optics)
- Front camera upgraded to 18 MP with better centering and framing
- Deep video support: ProRes RAW, Dolby Vision, cinematic modes, etc.
- Apple’s strength will be consistency, pipeline tuning, and dynamic range control
What Might Decide the Real Winner
Low light performance could be a key factor. Xiaomi’s powerful hardware gives it an edge in capturing more light, but Apple’s refined image tuning may produce cleaner, more natural-looking photos in darker scenes.
Zoom quality is another big area of comparison. Xiaomi’s aggressive approach can deliver incredible detail from afar, but it sometimes introduces unwanted artifacts. The iPhone tends to be softer in zoom shots, yet more consistent and reliable overall.
Consistency across all three lenses also matters. Apple has long excelled at making sure its wide, ultrawide, and telephoto cameras deliver matching color and exposure. Xiaomi will need to close that gap if it wants a truly seamless shooting experience.
Video quality and stabilization have always been Apple’s strong suit. Xiaomi’s hardware may be catching up, but the iPhone still offers smoother, steadier footage that feels professional straight out of the box.
Finally, there’s the shooting experience itself. Xiaomi gives users more control with manual settings and creative modes, while Apple focuses on simplicity and smarter automation that makes every shot look good with minimal effort.
