Even more interesting is a rumored shift in the phone’s camera hardware, which could bring back a quad-camera system after the previous model experimented with a different approach.

A possible December launch window

According to new leaks from tipsters circulating online, Xiaomi could follow the same release pattern used for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, which debuted in China toward the end of the year instead of the early-year launch schedule used by older Ultra models. If the pattern holds, the Xiaomi 18 Ultra might also debut in December 2026, before expanding to global markets later on.

While Xiaomi has not confirmed the device yet, the timeline aligns with the brand’s recent flagship strategy, where China launches often precede global releases by a few months.

Quad cameras may return

The biggest rumored change involves the camera system. Sources claim Xiaomi is currently testing a quad-camera configuration for the Xiaomi 18 Ultra, which would mark a return to a four-lens setup.

This is notable because the Xiaomi 17 Ultra reportedly moved away from a traditional four-camera design and instead focused on a mechanical zoom system with variable focal lengths. With the new generation, Xiaomi may be shifting back to a more versatile multi-camera setup to offer a wider range of focal lengths and shooting modes.

Earlier Ultra models have already proven that Xiaomi likes to push photography hardware. For instance, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra featured a quad-camera setup that included a 50MP main camera, 50MP telephoto, 200MP periscope telephoto, and 50MP ultrawide lens, giving the phone a strong reputation among camera-centric flagships.

If Xiaomi adopts a similar approach again, the Xiaomi 18 Ultra could deliver improved zoom flexibility and overall imaging versatility.

What the Xiaomi 18 series might bring

Leaks surrounding the broader Xiaomi 18 lineup hint at major upgrades in imaging and performance. Several reports suggest the series could include 200-megapixel camera sensors, including a periscope telephoto lens for advanced zoom capabilities.

Performance upgrades are also expected. Early rumors indicate that the Ultra variant may run on a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset, positioning it as one of the most powerful Android flagships of its generation.
