Xiaomi may be preparing a major shift in its foldable smartphone strategy. A new HyperOS leak suggests the company is working on a foldable device with a wider display format, a design approach that has already gained traction with HUAWEI and is reportedly being explored by Apple for its first foldable iPhone.
The wider foldable form factor is designed to improve usability in both folded and unfolded states, offering a more practical experience compared to traditional book-style foldables.
According to the leak, Xiaomi is developing a new foldable smartphone that adopts this wider design. The project comes after the company skipped a direct successor to the Mix Fold 4, which launched in 2024.
While Xiaomi has yet to confirm the device’s existence, leaked HyperOS interface elements have fueled speculation. Some enthusiasts have even overlaid the leaked UI onto renders of HUAWEI’s Pura X Max, with the layout reportedly fitting surprisingly well. While that doesn’t confirm the device’s design, it does lend credibility to reports that Xiaomi is experimenting with a wider foldable form factor.
The upcoming foldable is currently being referred to by several names in the rumor mill, including the Xiaomi Mix Fold 5, Xiaomi 18 Fold, and even Xiaomi 17 Fold.
Camera hardware could be one of the device’s key selling points. Early reports suggest a Leica-tuned triple-camera setup, potentially headlined by a 200MP primary sensor.
Under the hood, the foldable is rumored to be powered by Xiaomi’s in-house Xring O3 chipset, highlighting the company’s continued push toward developing its own core technologies. Leaks also point to improvements in HyperOS multitasking features, a refined hinge mechanism, and flagship-level performance.
There’s still plenty that remains unknown, and Xiaomi has not officially acknowledged the project. As with any early leak, specifications and features could change before launch.
However, the latest HyperOS findings suggest development is progressing at a relatively advanced stage. Current reports point to a possible launch in China around August 2026, though details regarding a global release remain unclear.
