Android’s latest Theft Protection feature starts to roll out and is compatible with devices running Android 10 or higher.
Android is getting major upgrades for its anti-theft features and they include advanced protocols to help prevent thieves from using stolen devices.
Mishaal Rahman spotted the release of an update and what it’s all about. It includes the phone’s ability to lock its screen if it detects motions associated with theft. The motion data is obtained from the accelerator and gyroscope.
The Theft Detection Lock was unveiled last May and it would utilize Google AI to protect your phone’s data in case your device was stolen. So, how does it shield your data?
- A motion linked to theft will automatically lock your phone’s screen.
- If the thief tries to disconnect your phone for a long time, Offline Device Lock will activate even if the device is off the internet.
- If the thief tries to factory reset your phone, they can’t set it up without your Google credentials.
- If the thief tries to disable the Find My Device or extend the screen timeout, the phone will now require your PIN, password, or biometrics.
- If the thief knows your PIN and wants to change it, the phone will require your biometrics. This also works when they try to alter your Google account, passkeys, and other related critical settings.
The Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock are available for devices on Android 10 or higher. Remote Lock lets you lock the phone’s screen and execute actions like full factory reset on the stolen device.
Meanwhile, Factory Reset Protection updates and Private Space will be launched as part of Android 15. Private Space gives you a separate space on your phone for sensitive information.
