YouTube cracks down.

YouTube is cracking down on illegal gambling, sorta…

While it is a step in the right direction, it’s still a stopgap solution to an otherwise systemic issue.

What is Youtube’s plan to curtail illegal gambling?

Starting March 19, YouTube will be cracking down on gambling-related content, with an aim to lessen the promotion of unauthorized gambling websites. As we all know, gambling has been on an upward trajectory, especially these past few years.

A little bit of history

Content creators, not just on YouTube but on almost every streaming platform, have been featuring or promoting gambling through playing, linking, and verbally referencing the activity, mainly because of the huge payout that these creators get from gambling companies.

While others view it as just another form of entertainment, some believe that this kind of promotion can widely affect a viewer’s perception of gambling because of the amount of influence that creators hold.

This is why YouTube decided to take down and impose age limitations on content that falsely advertises guaranteed results and those that don’t meet the local legal requirements.

However, not every gambling content is affected by the crackdown; online sports betting and in-person betting are still allowed.

Does it also apply in the Philippines?

There’s still no news if the sanctions only take place on certain countries. It sure would be nice to have it in the Philippines amidst growing concerns of gambling being involved in shady activities.

Do you agree? Do you also want YouTube to crackdown in the Philippines?
