4 months later: Is TECNO CAMON 20 Pro 5G still great for gaming?

TECNO CAMON 20 Pro 5G remains a beast in gaming and an excellent choice for those who want to play nonstop.

Even months after its release, TECNO CAMON 20 Pro 5G sustains its sulit label since it’s fully-packed. You’ll get not one but two SIMs with 5G support, three cameras at the back, and a large battery; a well-rounded mid-range smartphone.

However, mobile gaming has become a stable digital experience among Filipinos. It’s made easy by cheaper smartphones, affordable data plans of as low as ₱10, active communities, and of course, the Filipino spirit of competitiveness and determination.

TECNO CAMON 20 Pro 5G isn’t afraid of competitive gaming because this mid-ranger can still pack a punch and here’s why.

Powerful Processor

Under the hood are Dimensity 8050 and Mali-G77 that can dish out performance that many mid-rangers cannot achieve.

As of writing, this chipset still scores 746,241 on AnTuTu 10. That figure is flagship-level in 2021, which is why TECNO CAMON 20 Pro 5G can run Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail even on the highest graphics settings at 60FPS.

Expect the phone to heat up though, so we recommend medium settings at 30FPS. You can tweak the settings yourself to get the best balance.

Incredible Display

TECNO CAMON 20 Pro 5G sports 6.67 inches AMOLED display, which is known for the purest black and power efficiency.

But the reasons that make this a gaming factor is its 120Hz refresh rate and 360Hz touch sampling rate. A 120Hz refresh rate suggests you can play games up to 120FPS as long as supported.

The 360Hz touch sampling rate means that the screen detects new touch input every 2.8ms, big deal for action and shooter games.

Cooling System

Extreme heat is the greatest enemy of all smartphones. To cool itself off, TECNO CAMON 20 Pro 5G uses its 5,512 square-meter graphene and high polymer to dissipate heat. While it isn’t the largest cooling chamber, it’s relevant when augmented with bypass charging.

Bypass charging wasn’t included out of the box but TECNO rolled out an update that added this handy feature. You can find it under the Game Mode options in the Settings menu. This lets the phone power itself directly from the charging brick without going through the battery, keeping it cool.

Big Battery

TECNO CAMON 20 Pro 5G is equipped with a 5000mAh battery for all-day performance. Plug it in and charge up quickly with 33w fast charging.

If you don’t want to be bothered, bypass charge and play all day without interruption. Just remember that your gaming experience won’t be wireless like playing on a console.

Game Mode

The Game Mode offers a set of tweaks accessible in-game. It lets you quickly enable or disable the following:

  • Bypass charging: Play while the phone is plugged in without worrying about heat.
  • Gaming temperature: Toggle it for max performance or balanced mode.
  • Off-screen gaming: Dim the screen to save battery during AFKing.
  • Magic button: Customize the volume rockers for in-game controls.
  • Switch data: Switch which SIM you want for mobile data connection.

Is It Still a Great Gaming Phone?

TECNO CAMON 20 Pro 5G is still a great gaming phone even after several months of use. Thanks to the recent update, the processor has become more power and heat efficient compared to its out-of-the-box state. That same update included the dynamic bar as well, where important notifications appear around the notch.

For ₱12,999, you’ll get dual-SIM 5G experience, NFC, triple-rear camera setup with ring flash, 120Hz 1080p display with 360Hz touch sampling rate, on-screen fingerprint sensor, 5000mAh battery with fast charging and bypass charging support, and still aggressive processor backed by 8GB on-board RAM.

You won’t easily find an alternative for TECNO CAMON 20 Pro 5G at this price range, especially if you plan to game with your friends all-day, all-night.
