Qualcomm is reportedly testing its Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 chipset, aka SC8380, inside 10″ devices
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 chipset, also known as SC8380, is reportedly being tested inside a developmental device with a 10″ display. This suggests that the chipset will target tablets that are 10″ (or larger), possibly even 2-in-1 tablets, and potentially laptops that run Windows on ARM. Microsoft may even try again to create a dual-screen gadget similar to the Surface Neo.
Of course, these will be competing with Apple’s MacBook Airs and iPads using M-series chipsets. Which is appropriate considering that Nuvia, a startup founded by former Apple personnel who worked on the aforementioned M-series chipsets, designed the chipset and its Oryon CPU cores.
With 12 CPU cores, 8 performance (up to 3.4GHz) and 4 efficiency cores, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 (code name Hamoa) will have a faster clock speed (up to 2.5GHz). There will be a moderately powerful internal GPU, the Adreno 740, but bigger form factors, such laptops, can also be outfitted with external GPUs (linked over 8x PCIe 4.0), provided they have the necessary cooling.
Since November of last year, Qualcomm is allegedly evaluating Hamoa-based development hardware. When the first commercial devices will be made accessible is unclear; it could happen later this year or possibly in the first half of 2024. However, before then, we should start to see leaked benchmark results.
