Windows Paint is now a more powerful image editor with layers and transparency support

Following the introduction of the one-click background removal feature, the Windows Paint application is set to receive new capabilities, including the addition of layers and transparency.

However, it’s important to note that these features won’t be immediately available to all users. They are currently in the testing phase within the Canary and Dev Channels, specifically for Windows Insiders, under version 11.2308.18.0 or higher. Once they have undergone further testing and achieved stability, they will be gradually rolled out.

The introduction of layers allows users to stack shapes, text, and images on top of one another, enabling the creation of more intricate digital art. To access this feature, users can click on the Layers button in the toolbar, which opens a side panel on the canvas where new layers can be added. Additionally, users have the ability to show, hide, duplicate, and merge individual layers.

Furthermore, Paint will now support transparency, including the option to open and save images in the transparent PNG format. Transparent areas of an image or background will be indicated by a checkerboard pattern on the canvas, distinguishing them from opaque elements. Previously, erasing the background or other content would result in a white space rather than true transparency. This feature also interacts with other layers; erasing content on one layer will reveal the underlying image on other layers.
