Goodbye MIUI, welcome MI OS

Another era comes to an end after 13 long years. MIUI will be replaced by MI OS soon.

Xiaomi has made a big step with its mobile UI as the company will soon move to MI OS after 13 years of consistent software development. However, the MI OS will remain under the Android flag since the company still needs to sell devices running that mobile OS.

So, what’s the reason behind this decision? Creating an OS isn’t just about rebranding or overhauling. A company could build its own ecosystem to support many of its devices. It’s also a way to enable IoT or internet-of-things where devices can run or support the same software.

Google is already doing this despite the fragmented nature of Android. Through Google Docs Editors, every Android user can connect and work together regardless of OS version. As long as that Android version is supported, the device can use the service.

According to popular tipster Digital Chat Station, the likely final official build of MIUI will be MIUI 14. But the company won’t terminate support or additional patches for older versions. What MIUI users won’t expect is MIUI 15 and so on.

Xiaomi isn’t the first one to do this. Huawei did it earlier thanks to the applied sanctions. The HarmonyOS has been the solution and what many don’t know is it works seamlessly on both Android and HarmonyOS apps.

Anyway, there’s no official list of recipients of MI OS as of writing. But you can expect newer phones to be shipped with it once the OS is up and ready for commercial use.
