MediaTek RedCap: 5G performance and power efficiency in mobile, business, and industrial IoT

The company is expanding its chipsets and modems to support 5G RedCap to enable efficient battery life on IoT settings.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an environment that interconnects sensors, devices, and more. This environment uses the internet to transfer data at high speeds, but is often challenged by power requirements.

MediaTek has a solution for that called RedCap. In September, the Taiwan-based firm announced its team-up with Ericsson and Verizon to make 5G RedCap IoT a reality. RedCap or “reduced capability” is designed to deliver the benefits of 5G to NR consumer, business, and industrial devices.

At the recent MediaTek Executive Summit, RedCap is revealed with performance reliability at low bandwidth requirements so 5G benefits can be achieved without much cost and complexity of usual solutions.

To do that, the company is offering new solutions in the M60 modem IP and MediaTek T300 chipset series. The new line of devices is part of replacing legacy 4G/LTE solutions, but with more efficient battery life and more reliable user experience.

MediaTek’s T300 series is a six-nanometer Radio Frequency SoC single-die solution for RedCap. This chipset has a single-core Arm Cortex-A35 and supports up to 227 Mbps downlink and 122 Mbps uplink data rates.

The power efficiency is from MediaTek’s UltraSave 4.0 technology and management of unnecessary paging receptions. Together, these features can cut up to 70% power consumption compared to similar 5G eMBB solutions and up to 75% lower power consumption than other 4G LTE solutions.

MediaTek T300 series will begin sampling in the first half of next year, with commercial samples rolling out by the second half of 2024.
