MediaTek Helio G91 processor: Newest Helio G with better imaging processor

MediaTek announced a camera-focused Helio SoC for the affordable smartphone segment.

MediaTek recently unveiled the newest Helio G91 processor, a sibling of G88 and G85.

But what makes this SoC different? According to the semiconductor firm, Helio G91 features a better imaging signal processor and that means better camera support than its siblings.

Helio G91 supports 108MP cameras and in-sensor zoom with 2.0µm pixels. It also features a hardware depth engine for:

  • Dual-camera bokeh
  • Camera control unit
  • Electronic image stabilization or EIS
  • Rolling shutter compensation or RSC

Other hardware support by Helio G91 includes:

Display1080 x 2520
Refresh rateUp to 90Hz
Bluetooth5.0
Wi-FiWi-Fi 5 a/b/g/n/ac
Cellular4G/LTE

Helio G91 may not have major performance upgrades because the CPU cores are configured as 2×2.0GHz Cortex-A75 and 6×1.8GHz Cortex-A55, similar to G88 and G85. Even their graphics are the same in Mali-G52 with a max clock speed of 1GHz.

Memory-wise, all three only support LPDDR4x with a max memory frequency of 1800MHz and memory size of 8GB. The storage type supported is eMMC 5.1, which is slower than UFS 2.0.

The Helio G91, however, is a strong candidate in the camera arena within the competitive budget segment. So, expect this SoC for upcoming camera-centric entry-level or midrange smartphones soon.
