Legendary Manga Creator Akira Toriyama Passes Away
We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Akira Toriyama, the visionary artist behind Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball Super, at the age of 68. His influence on anime is undeniable, shaping countless stories with his vibrant worlds and unforgettable characters.
Born in Nagoya, Japan in 1955, Toriyama introduced the world to Goku and his adventures in 1984 with Dragon Ball. The series became a global phenomenon, forever changing the landscape of anime. His dedication continued until recently, with his involvement in the upcoming film Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
The official Dragon Ball website shared a heartfelt statement:
“Dear Friends and Partners,
It is with deep sadness that we inform you of manga creator Akira Toriyama’s passing on March 1st due to acute subdural hematoma. He was 68 years old.
We are filled with regret at the loss of his creative spirit and the many stories yet to be told. However, his legacy lives on through his beloved manga titles and artwork. Thanks to the unwavering support of fans worldwide, he was able to share his passion for over 45 years.
We hope Akira Toriyama’s unique worlds will continue to inspire and entertain for generations to come.
We share this news with a heavy heart, but also with immense gratitude for your enduring support throughout his life.
The funeral service was a private ceremony for his family. Respecting his wishes for tranquility, we kindly ask that you refrain from flowers, gifts, condolences visits, offerings, and interviews with his family. Information regarding a commemorative gathering will be shared at a later date.
