Be proud Filipinos as the Philippines has been shortlisted for a prestigious award.
The City of Makati is a candidate for a distinguished award of the World Smart Cities Awards 2023. It’s the only city shortlisted from the Philippines and Asia Pacific under the City Awards category.
A total 411 proposals were submitted to the award-giving body under various categories from 63 nations. Now down to the Top 6, Makati is a finalist alongside Curitiba, Brazil; Barranquilla, Colombia; Cascais, Portugal; Izmir, Turkey; and Sunderland, UK.
“This platform will not only allow Makati to showcase its achievements but also to share insights, learn from others, and foster international collaboration for building smarter, more sustainable cities worldwide,” said Makati Mayor Abby Binay.
As per official website, the City Award is given to cities that developed global strategies, projects, and policies which could be applied on its residents.
Makati City was cited for its use of Internet of Things or IoT to deliver data-driven policies to empower the city and its netizens in becoming “better stewards of energy and environment.”
IoT describes a digital environment where devices communicate and exchange data via sensors, software, and other technologies. Makati has been launching IoT projects left and right, including top-notch smart meters that are designed to maximize energy and water in public schools.
Other similar projects include noise pollution sensors, indoor and outdoor air quality monitors, and asset trackers for improving resource management around the city. Solar panels were also installed in nine of its public schools for sustainable energy.
The winners will be unveiled on November 8 at the main auditorium during the World Smart City Awards gala.
