The government reminds the public to be vigilant with the expected increase in scam rates this holiday season.
The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) is reminding the public to be careful of their online transactions after a study showed that the Philippines has the highest shopping scam rate in Asia.
The study, which was published by GASA and Gogolook, found that the shopping scam rate in the Philippines is 35.9%. This is followed by investment scams at 29%, lottery scams at 22.9%, job scams at 17.8%, and identity theft at 17.7%.
CICC Executive Director Alexander K. Ramos said that the high shopping scam rate in the Philippines is due to a number of factors, including the high volume of online shopping during the holiday season and people’s vulnerability during this period.
Ramos also said that scammers are taking advantage of people’s trust in friends and family members. He said that 24.8% of Filipino victims respond too quickly to scammers’ demands and 21.1% of victims chose to take a risk despite uncertainty about the risk.
The CICC is appealing to the public to call 1326 if they are victims of shopping scams and other cybercrimes.
