Pixel 8a locatable even when dead: Powered-off finding explained

Good news for Pixel 8a users! Even if your phone runs out of battery, you might still find it thanks to Google’s Find My Device network.

This network, still limited to some regions, allows select Android devices (including the Pixel 8a) to be located when powered off. This is possible because the Pixel 8a has specialized hardware that lets its Bluetooth chip keep broadcasting a beacon for several hours after the battery dies.

Nearby Android devices pick up this beacon, anonymously report its location to Google, and you can then use Find My Device to see where your phone is.

To enable this feature, simply opt into Find My Device on your Pixel 8a (excluding “off” or “without network” options).Remember, Bluetooth and location services must also be enabled for it to work.
