Qualcomm to lead AI-powered CPUs starting with Oryon CPU tech on Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and Snapdragon X Elite.
When Qualcomm revealed the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, everyone got hyped by its upgrades and other improvements. However, it wasn’t as massive as the time when SD 8 Gen 2 succeeded its predecessor.
It may change this year though, with the expected announcement of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. Unlike the current Gen 3 flagship SoC, the upcoming model is super-charged with AI functionalities.
Qualcomm Chief Marketing Officer Don McGuire posted on X confirming that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is getting powered by Oryon CPU technology, which is a big leap from ARM CPU technology.
During last year’s Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm gave out clues on what to expect from Oryon tech.
AI is the true star of this tech, particularly generative AI models with more than 13 billion parameters having at least 4.5 times faster AI processing capability than the competition. It means the Oryon CPU cores are smarter than the ones on your phone.
Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite is the likely first version of an Oryon-powered SoC with initial release on laptops and similar devices. On white paper, at least, this Snapdragon chipset can deliver:
- Up to 2X faster CPU and 2X faster GPU than x86
- 12 high-performance cores with Dual-Core boost (mobile computing)
- Triple UHD monitor support
- 4-nm process node
- 68% less power consumption on PC
Prior rumors suggested that Oryon CPU cores are quite expensive because of their more costly silicon. If true, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be the m`ost pricey smartphone CPU.
