Dimensity 1080 from MediaTek announced, improved CPU performance and efficiency expected

MediaTek’s Dimensity 1080 is expected to deliver better CPU performance and battery conservation for mid-ranger phones

MediaTek is expected to unveil a new mid-range processor under the Dimensity series. Dubbed as the Dimensity 1080, it is promised that the new offering will have better efficiency, better camera support and overall speed for playing games compared to Dimensity 920.

Dimensity 1080’s highlight here is the camera capability which can handle up to 200MP from the previous 108MP with the Imagiq ISP. There’s also hardware accelerated HDR video function up to 4K resolution, but this isn’t unique to chipsets under this range.

Dimensity 1080 is also 5G capable, with a slight bump to performance, thanks to two Cortex-A78 cores clocking in at around 2.6GHz compared to the previous 2.5GHz. The GPU however, remains unchanged as it still packs the Mali-G6, and it is still built on a 6nm process.

Benchmark-wise, the Dimensity 1080 should get a slight edge over the Dimensity 920, and is predicted to have around 470,000 to 490,000 on the latest AnTuTu version.

The same gaming-specific features from previous chipsets like the 1080 has HyperEngine 3.0 from the 920 is still here and still supports sub-6GHz 5G networks, Wi-Fi 6, and it has the same AI Processing Unit (APU) systems.

According to MediaTek, devices powered by the Dimensity 1080 will begin shipping in Q4 of 2022. In which we predict some new POCO phones, realme, some OPPO and Vivo ones, and even Motorola and Sony will announce new smartphone with the Dimensity 1080 inside.
