HUAWEI P70 Art aims to be the best camera smartphone with a 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor

HUAWEI is reportedly preparing to launch its next flagship smartphone series, the P70, in March 2024. While details are still scarce, a reliable source has revealed some key information about the camera setup of the top-end model, the HUAWEI P70 Pro.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the P70 Pro will boast a massive 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor, making it one of the largest camera sensors ever used in a smartphone. This sensor will be paired with a 1G6P glass-plastic hybrid lens, which is expected to offer superior optical performance and resistance to deformation.

Glass-plastic hybrid lenses are a relatively new technology, and only one other smartphone, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, currently uses them. These lenses are more expensive to produce than traditional lenses, but they offer significant advantages in terms of image quality.

The 1G6P lens that HUAWEI will use is expected to cost around $12 in its early stages of production, but that cost is projected to drop to $6-7 once mass production begins. With the increasing adoption of glass-plastic hybrid lenses by leading manufacturers like Apple and Huawei, we can expect to see these lenses become more common in future smartphones.

The HUAWEI P70 series is expected to launch in March 2024, followed by the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and Vivo X100 Ultra in April.
