Nothing continues its gradual release of details leading up to the March 5 launch of the Nothing Phone 2(a). In a recent YouTube video, the smartphone brand unveiled the processor for its upcoming device. The Nothing Phone 2(a) will be equipped with a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro processor, marking a notable shift as it becomes the first Nothing phone to feature a MediaTek chipset. This development follows the use of Snapdragon 778G Plus and Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 in the Nothing Phone 1 and 2, respectively.

Raymond Zhu, the product marketing manager at Nothing, provided insights into the differences distinguishing the Dimensity 7200 Pro from the standard Dimensity 7200. He underscored a 10% enhancement in efficiency for specific components like the display IC chip and modem. Additionally, Nothing’s software team crafted tailored features for this chipset, introducing the Smart Clean feature.

Despite its alignment with the standard chip in various aspects, featuring a capable CPU (2x Cortex-A715 and 6x Cortex-A510) and a Mali-G610 MC4 GPU, Zhu elucidated the rationale behind opting for MediaTek over Qualcomm in the development of the Nothing Phone 2(a).

Zhu acknowledged the inherent challenge of promoting MediaTek, particularly in a market where Qualcomm is more entrenched, such as the UK. Despite this obstacle, he justified the decision by emphasizing the company’s commitment to delivering the “best possible performance” for its users.

Zhu also revealed the selection process involved evaluating the Dimensity 7200 Pro, Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, and Snapdragon 782G, with the MediaTek SoC ultimately demonstrating superior performance compared to its Snapdragon counterparts.

The video also briefly featured a graphic indicating 12GB of RAM for the Nothing Phone 2(a), although it remains uncertain if this specification is universally applicable to all variants.

In addition to the official information provided by Nothing, recent leaked renders have emerged, showcasing a phone with a distinct circular camera housing that accommodates two side-by-side cameras. Encouragingly, the phone appears to retain Nothing’s signature Glyph lighting.
