Apple tops global market share for 2023

Apple dominates worldwide mobile market share with 20.1% and over 234 million shipments.

The creator of iOS is the victor of 2023, a new report found. The IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, January 15, 2024, revealed that Apple triumphed in both market share and shipment last year, despite the tight competition versus Android.

“Apple certainly played a part in Samsung’s drop in rank, but the overall Android space is diversifying within itself,” said Ryan Reith, group vice president with IDC’s Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers.

For the fourth quarter of 2023, Apple shipped 80.5 million units globally and gained a global market share of 24.7%. Those numbers are greater than the 72.1 million shipments and 24% global market share of the company in Q4 of 2022.

Versus its biggest rival, Apple beat Samsung’s 53 million shipments and 16.3% market share for Q4 2023. The report revealed that Samsung hit a snag too based on its year-over-year performance where it had 59.5 million shipments and 19.8% market share in Q4 2022.

For the whole 2023, Apple dominated the global market share with 20.1% and 234.6 million shipments, higher than the 18.8% market share and 226.3 million shipments in 2022.

Meanwhile, Samsung garnered 19.4% of the global market share and shipped 226.6 million units worldwide. These figures are lower than the 21.7% market share and 262.2 million shipments in 2022.

Apple is the biggest factor in Samsung’s drop in the ranks, but other players in the Android mobile segment are contributing as well.

In Q4 2023, Xiaomi, Transsion, and vivo showed rising shipments versus their performances in Q4 2022. Though, these brands suffered drops in the entire-year comparison of shipments between 2023 and 2022. Transsion, composed of itel, TECNO, and Infinix, is the only firm with a steady growth.

The data from the report is preliminary and subject to change, while shipments don’t include OEM sales from vendors.
