The phone’s software support is also extended to 7 years, which is quite impressive
Every smartphone manufacturer discusses environmental protection and sustainability efforts. But frequently, all they manage to do is take the charger out of the box. The word “sustainability” is taken seriously by Fairphone, if there is one company that does.
The Dutch firm is renowned for providing longer years of software support. In a recent development, the business disclosed an Android 13 upgrade for the Fairphone, which is four years old, as well as an extension of its service period until 2026.
In 2019 and 2020, the Fairphone 3 and Fairphone 3+, respectively, were released. Five years of significant updates were previously promised for both phones, however, the business was unable to provide Android 12 for both models.
This, according to Fairphone, was caused by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 chip’s inability to handle Android 12.
Fairphone is now rolling out Android 13 to both phones, skipping Android 12. The Dutch company is extending the software support of the Fairphone 3 and Fairphone 3+ until 2026, or a total of 7 years of OS updates, to make up for the one missing Android update.
It’s important to note that Qualcomm only supported the Snapdragon 632 SoC in the Fairphone 3 up to Android 11. This indicates that Fairphone will be in charge of creating and disseminating any upcoming upgrades for the phone. Although it is a significant task, Fairphone has a solid track record of offering ongoing software support for its products.
By providing its customers with 7 years of upgrades, Fairphone is creating a new benchmark for long-term software support. This is more than any other significant smartphone maker, including the uncontested king of software updates, Samsung.
