On October 9, GCash experienced widespread downtime. The company has since restored normal operations and attributed the downtime to the implementation of new safety and security measures to prevent unsecured devices from accessing the app.
GCash did not elaborate on the specific security measures that were put in place, but the company advised users to never share their MPIN or OTP with anyone, and that GCash will never send emails or messages with links or reach out to customers via calls or other messaging platforms.
“GCash has been continuously rolling out safety and security measures to prevent unsecured devices from accessing the app. While implementing this, the app remained operational but some customers may have experienced intermittent access to selected services.
As of October 9, 7:00 PM, the intermittent issues have been addressed and all affected services are accessible. We assure our customers that their accounts and funds remain secure. The latest security deployment is part of ongoing enhancements to ensure the safest and most secure experience for our customers.
Our official channels remain open and accessible for any concerns. Go to the GCash Help Center at https://help.gcash.com, and talk to Gigi. We advise our users to never share their MPIN and One-time PIN (OTP) with anyone. GCash will never send emails or messages with links nor reach out to customers via calls and other messaging platforms.”
This downtime comes after GCash has enhanced the security of its mobile app by implementing measures to restrict access for modified devices. This proactive approach involves preventing access for devices that have been jailbroken, rooted, or have undergone changes to their settings.
