Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro debut with Tensor G3, new cam setup, and up to 1TB storage

The unveiling of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro may seem long overdue, given the flurry of leaks and teasers, but they are now officially here.

The most significant addition is the Tensor G3 chipset, manufactured using Samsung’s advanced 4nm process. This powerhouse includes a 9-core processor comprising a single Cortex-X3 prime core, four Cortex-A715 cores, and an additional four Cortex-A510 cores. While the Pixel 8 boasts 8GB of RAM, the Pro version steps it up to an impressive 12GB. Both Pixel 8 models are IP68-rated for water and dust resistance and offer the convenience of fingerprint and face unlock.

The Pixel 8 Pro boasts a 6.7-inch QHD+ LTPO OLED display with a remarkable peak brightness of 2,400 nits, all protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. You have the option to choose from three elegant colors: Blue, Obsidian, and Beige.

On the Pixel 8 Pro’s back, you’ll find a trio of cameras: a 50MP Octa-PD wide shooter with OIS, a new 48MP Quad-PD ultrawide, and a 48MP Quad-PD 5x zoom camera with the capability of up to 30X Super-Res digital zoom. The front camera is an all-new 10.5MP unit with a wide field of view. Notably, the Pixel 8 Pro exclusively features a skin temperature sensor alongside the cameras, designed for temperature reading purposes rather than photography enhancements.

When it comes to photography features, the new Pixel 8 series introduces Photo Unblur, Magic Eraser, Best Take, and Macro Focus (utilizing the ultrawide lens). The Pixel 8 Pro adds a new Pro Controls feature, setting it apart from the standard Pixel 8.

Powering the Pixel 8 Pro is a substantial 5,050mAh battery with 30W wired charging and 23W wireless charging.

The Pixel 8 is available in three attractive colors: Hazel, Obsidian, and Rose.

Turning to the Pixel 8, it has shed some weight and size compared to its predecessor, thanks to a smaller 6.2-inch FHD+ display.

This display offers improvements across the board, with a brighter panel reaching 2,000 nits peak brightness and finally adopting a 120Hz refresh rate (with the flexibility to switch between 60Hz and 120Hz). It also features Gorilla Glass Victus protection.

In terms of camera capabilities, the Pixel 8 introduces a new ultrawide lens, though different from the Pro version. It’s a 12MP unit with autofocus and macro capabilities. Next to it is a 50MP Octa-PD main camera with an 8x Super-Res digital zoom. The Pixel 8 retains the same 10.5MP selfie camera as its Pro counterpart.

Powering the Pixel 8 is a 4,575mAh battery with 27W wired charging and 18W wireless charging.

Both the new Google Pixel 8 phones come with a complimentary Google One VPN and a commitment to provide 7 years of OS and security updates, which sets a new standard in the Android ecosystem. To put it in perspective, the latest iOS 17 was only accessible to devices up to 5 years old.

The starting price for the 128GB Google Pixel 8 is €800/$700/INR76,000/~₱39,645, while the 128GB Google Pixel 8 Pro comes in at €1,100/$1,000/INR107,000/~₱56,637. In Europe and the US, a Pixel 8 purchase includes a free pair of Pixel Buds Pro, while a Pixel 8 Pro purchase includes a Pixel Watch 2. In India, you can enjoy a 50% discount on these accessories.
