itel S23 4G (256GB) gaming review – Good for casual gamers on a budget

The itel S23 4G is a competent, good-quality entry-level phone. It can handle most tasks and light-gaming. But how does it actually perform? In this article, we’ll talk in-depth about its gaming capabilities

Let’s go right into the gameplay review, but first off, here are the phone’s internal hardware:

The Unisoc Tiger T606 processor powering the Itel S23 4G operates at 1.61GHz (both the two big cores and the six little cores are clocked at the same speed). It contains 4GB of RAM, which can be increased to 8GB via the Virtual RAM feature.

For its AnTuTu score, check the image below:

It scored around 270968 points on AnTuTu Lite (v9.5.9) which is more than enough to run most apps with minimal stutters and lag. Popular games such as CoDM, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and Genshin Impact’s performance are as follows:

The AnTuTu score is respectable for a phone of its price. It may help with multitasking, but at the end of the day, it all depends on what SoC can handle. What’s surprising is the 256GB storage onboard which is a rarity for its price. More apps, more data, more fun.

Below is an embedded video of our gameplay tests for the phone:

We also added a Minecraft gameplay test as a bonus:

CoD: Mobile graphics settings

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang graphics settings:

Remarks regarding each game:

  • CoDM: Medium graphics / High refresh rate – Playable but there are constant frame drops and heavy lag when there are too many players. Multiplayer is fine, but we advise turning the graphics to low instead and downloading shader preload for both modes.
  • MLBB: High graphics / High refresh rate – Extremely playable, as the game has great optimization. It can even run smoothly on a device from many years ago. Comparing this aside, turning the graphics smooth and the refresh rate to high is better.
  • Minecraft: Render Distance: 8/ Unlimited frame rate: Extremely playable, as the game isn’t really that demanding compared to other games in this list. Minecraft runs very well on the Itel S23 4G(256GB), as seen in the gaming test above.
  • Genshin Impact: Low graphics / low refresh rate –  Even with the lowest settings, Genshin Impact struggles to run on this device. Barely playable, but with its price point, it is quite surprising that the game can even run on this device.

Since the phone experiences throttling during the first ten minutes of gaming(except in Minecraft and Mobile Legends), even the Game Space feature provides very little to no benefit. The gameplay test begins at minute 11:57 in the entire video review of the phone, which is linked below for additional reference.

Final thoughts:

It delivers competitive specifications for a phone at this price point’s entry level. Although we shouldn’t anticipate this gadget to deliver exceptional gaming performance, it does it in an acceptable manner. Itel did a fantastic job of compressing excellent quality without compromising it for a reasonable price.
