Nokia and vivo sign a multi-year cross-license agreement

Nokia announced today the formalization of a multi-year cross-license agreement with vivo, marking a pivotal moment in their relationship.

As part of this accord, the Chinese tech giant has committed to paying royalties to Nokia, along with catch-up payments for the disputed period.

This comprehensive agreement successfully resolves all lingering patent litigation matters between Nokia and vivo. The specific terms of the deal will remain confidential, in accordance with the mutual agreement reached by both companies.

Crucially, this milestone stands as one of the concluding steps in Nokia’s smartphone licensing renewal cycle. The resolution is anticipated to facilitate vivo’s re-entry into the European market, following a prohibition on the sale of its new phones due to the unresolved legal dispute.

Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, disclosed that this agreement represents the sixth major smartphone patent license deal inked by Nokia in the past thirteen months. Lukander emphasized the strategic significance of the deal, projecting it to bring enduring stability to Nokia’s licensing business for an extended period.

vivo expressed its perspective on the agreement, citing it as a manifestation of “mutual recognition and respect for each other’s patent value in cellular technology.” The company highlighted the pivotal role this deal is expected to play in cultivating a positive and collaborative development environment within the industry.
