PhilHealth: Antivirus subscription expired during ransomware attack

During a ransomware attack that forced the state health insurer, PhilHealth, to take preventive security measures, it came to light that their antivirus subscription had expired

According to a report by Mark Salazar on “24 Oras,” PhilHealth acknowledged that their antivirus software had expired on April 15, but due to complex government procurement processes, they were unable to promptly renew their subscription. They have since implemented temporary antivirus software to address the issue.

Rey T. Baleña, the OIC of PhilHealth’s Corporate Affairs Group, stated, “We have eradicated the virus, and we are preparing for our colleagues to use it again. So, not all workstations were affected.” It’s worth noting that PhilHealth experienced a ransomware attack by Medusa on September 22, which led to the temporary shutdown of its online systems.
