TECNO Phantom Ultimate, a rollable smartphone concept

A rollable smartphone display that works? TECNO is on a roll this time!

TECNO unveiled the latest product of its R&D labs today – the rollable smartphone concept: The Phantom Ultimate. It expands sideways, increasing the display from 6.55” to 7.11” in 1.2-1.3 seconds.

The TECNO Phantom Ultimate has a 6.55-inch AMOLED display that can be extended to a 7.11-inch display with a single-drive motor system. The expansion takes about 1.2 to 1.3 seconds. When the device is rolled up, the extra screen sits on the back and acts as an Always-On Display.

The Phantom Ultimate is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 processor and has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It has a triple-camera system on the back, consisting of a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 13-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and an 8-megapixel telephoto sensor. The front-facing camera is 40 megapixels.

The device is 9.93 mm thick at its base and weighs 215 grams. It has a textured back for better grip and protective glass for the sliding area.

The TECNO Phantom Ultimate is currently just a concept, but Tecno has said that it is working on bringing it to market in the future. However, there are still some technological limitations that need to be overcome before rollable phones can become mainstream. These limitations include the durability of the rollable display, the efficiency of the motor system, and the cost of production.
