Western Digital branded SSDs are now discontinued

Western Digital to Discontinue WD Brand for SSDs, Focuses on HDDs

In a significant strategic shift, storage giant Western Digital has announced plans to discontinue the WD brand for SSDs and focus exclusively on hard disk drives (HDDs). The company’s board of directors has approved a plan to split its HDD and flash memory (SSD) businesses into two independent, publicly traded companies, aiming to enhance their respective strategic directions and innovation capabilities.

This move, expected to be completed in the second half of 2024, will see Western Digital solely focus on the production and sale of HDDs, while its SSD products will be handled exclusively under the SanDisk brand. This brand consolidation marks a return to SanDisk’s pre-acquisition state, as it was acquired by Western Digital in 2016 for a staggering USD19 billion.

Over the past few years, Western Digital has been selling some SanDisk SSDs under the WD brand. However, with the implementation of this new strategy, SanDisk will once again become the sole branding for all SSDs produced by the company. This move is intended to provide greater clarity and focus for consumers, allowing them to easily distinguish between HDDs and SSDs under distinct brand identities.

In addition to the brand shift, Western Digital is also expected to address the recent increase in consumer complaints regarding sudden data loss on SanDisk SSDs. The company has acknowledged these concerns and has pledged to enhance its quality control measures to ensure the reliability and longevity of its SSD products.

The separation of Western Digital’s HDD and SSD businesses is expected to bring several benefits, including:

  • Enhanced strategic focus: Each company will be able to dedicate its resources and expertise solely to its respective market, allowing for more focused innovation and product development.
  • Improved operational efficiency: By streamlining operations and focusing on specific product categories, both companies can enhance their overall efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Strengthened brand identity: The distinct branding of HDDs under Western Digital and SSDs under SanDisk will provide greater clarity for consumers and help each brand establish a stronger presence in its respective market.

As Western Digital and SanDisk embark on their independent journeys, the industry will be closely watching how these strategic moves will impact their market positions, product offerings, and overall success.
