In October 2021, Microsoft introduced the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA), allowing Windows 11 to run Android apps. It functioned on both x86-64 and ARM processors, despite the dominance of ARM in most modern Android devices.
According to an updated Microsoft Learn page, WSA will reach its end-of-support date on March 5, 2025. Users can continue installing and running apps through the Amazon Appstore until then and access support if needed.
The Unofficial Play Store and the Future:
While future possibilities remain unclear, the possibility of community efforts resurrecting WSA exists. Certain developers have already established methods to install and run the Google Play Store, despite its lack of official support. This unofficial access may have been a contributing factor to WSA’s discontinuation, as the Play Store serves as a significant barrier to entry for Android outside of Google’s ecosystem.
