Elon Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), has officially changed its tune on adult content. In a move likely to spark debate, X will now explicitly permit users to share consensual adult nudity and sexual content.
This decision reflects Musk’s stated goal of promoting free speech on the platform. However, X is also implementing safeguards. Adult content must be clearly labeled and restricted from prominent areas like profile pictures. Accounts regularly posting such content will need to mark it as sensitive. Additionally, the policy protects children and users who opt out of seeing adult material. This applies to all forms of adult content, including AI-generated imagery and animation.
Transparency and Backlash
X’s safety team emphasizes the new guidelines aim to provide “clarity” and “transparency” on content moderation. This follows criticism directed at Musk for reducing content moderation staff after acquiring X in 2022. These cuts coincided with technical issues and the return of controversial figures to the platform.
Musk’s ambitions for X extend beyond content moderation. He envisions a future where X becomes a “super app,” offering a one-stop shop for communication, payments, and various online services, similar to China’s WeChat.
