Meizu halts traditional smartphone creations to focus on AI with six products already on schedule.
Chinese electronics firm, Meizu, officially announced its departure from smartphone making in favor of AI development. The company has now stopped the creation of new smartphones so it can focus strategically on AI-based hardware products.
The decision is for putting efforts in the development of “tomorrow’s devices” powered by AI. The shift now matches the planned evolution in 2023 from a traditional “mobile phone company” to an “ecological group.”
Meizu isn’t a new player in other tech endeavors. After all, the brand has made successes in immersive multi-terminal experiences and establishing the MYVU brand of AR smartglasses.
For Meizu smartphone users, the move effectively stops the development of upcoming phones, such as Meizu 22 and Meizu 23. But existing services and products remain supported by the company, including Flyme OS, Flyme Auto, and Flyme AR, among others.
Meizu will continue to provide support for its traditional smartphones to let users rely on them for many more years.
As for the AI roadmap, the company has a clear path with six AI-focused hardware products already lined up from 2024 to 2026. The first AI device is scheduled for launch this year, with an all-weather AI device and an AI device iteration releasing in 2025. By 2026, one all-weather AI device, one AI device iteration, and one AI device Pro are set for release.
The brand’s last flagship smartphone rollout is the Meizu 21, powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, up to 12/512GB memory, and 4,800mAh battery. It features a triple-rear camera setup with a 200MP main shooter. Know more about this device below.
