Shopee lays off workers, then proceeds to hire Toni G with huge talent fee

After a supposed loss of around 55 billion pesos, the e-commerce giant is cutting off a massive chunk of its workers, then introduces staunch right-wing supporter Toni Gonzaga as their new endorser

This 55 billion loss occurred during the second quarter of 2022, which leads to the company to start sending off emails to unlucky workers who will be chosen for the “Great Shopee Layoff”.

Allegedly, both Singapore and China divisions of Shopee also announce layoffs. In India, France, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, and Mexico — the company operations there had been stopped quite some time to a couple of days ago.

Meanwhile, back in the Philippines, Shopee acquired a new endorser for the company and basing on the teasers they have provided, it’s none other Toni Gonzaga, which is on a lot of heat for a long time now, being a supporter of the current adminstration, and even hosted some of their campaign rallies.

Netizens on the other hand, are not happy with the current endorser, going so far as to say that Shopee will go bankrupt by letting a ‘dictator lover’ be the face of their company. Many also announced that they are switching to Lazada and other e-commerce website, leaving others who have an outstanding balance at SPayLater — a loaning program offered by Shopee.

How about you, fellow reader? Is this the right move for Shopee or their bankruptcy is inevitable? Is there some kind of political motivation behind this or people are just plain overreacting about this?
