Android 15 locates lost devices even when off

Losing your phone is stressful, especially if it’s off. Google’s Find My Device helps, but it can’t locate powered-down phones. Android 15 tackles this with a new Powered Off Finding API.

This API uses pre-stored Bluetooth beacons to help locate your phone even when switched off. However, it requires special hardware to power the Bluetooth chip and a tiny battery reserve.

While initial rumors pointed to the Pixel 9, the API might also work on Pixel 8 with the Android 15 update.

Here’s the catch: using this feature requires not only compatible hardware but also software updates. You’ll need Android 15 and the latest Find My Device app.

Unfortunately, older Pixels (Fold, 7 series, 6 series) might miss out. It’s unclear if it’s a hardware or software limitation. However, there’s a chance it could be added to recent high-end models like the Pixel Fold in the future.
