Fix your iPhone for less: Apple now allows repairs with used parts

Apple announced a significant expansion to its repair program, allowing users and independent repair providers to utilize genuine used parts in iPhone repairs. This is a major shift, as previously, repairs required new parts paired specifically to the device.

The key to this change is a new “parts calibration” process. Once a used, genuine Apple part is installed in a new iPhone, it undergoes calibration to ensure full functionality and security, mirroring the performance of a new part. This eliminates compatibility issues and restrictions associated with using previously paired parts.

Privacy and Security Remain a Priority

Apple emphasizes its commitment to user privacy and security with the continued use of “part pairing.” This process verifies part authenticity and gathers information to deter theft. Previously, replacing a part with one used in another phone caused issues because of this pairing.

Enabling Biometric Sensor Reuse

Apple has spent two years developing a way to reuse biometric sensors (Face ID/Touch ID) in repairs. With this update, calibration happens directly on the device after installation, eliminating the need to provide a serial number when ordering non-logic board parts.

Activation Lock Extended to Deter Theft

Apple is extending Activation Lock to deter theft for parts. If a repair shop attempts to use a part from a stolen phone with Activation Lock or Lost Mode enabled, the calibration will be restricted, rendering the part unusable.

Transparency Through Enhanced Parts and Service History

Apple’s existing “Parts and Service history” feature in Settings will be expanded to distinguish between new and used genuine parts, offering greater transparency to second and third-hand iPhone owners.

Apple’s Commitment to Sustainability

John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, highlights the environmental benefits of this program. He states Apple’s dedication to designing durable products and finding ways to extend their lifespan, ultimately reducing their environmental impact. This expansion provides customers with more options and convenience while promoting sustainability.
